How to set a savings goal you'll actually reach
Guide · Last checked: 21 October 2026
Saving is easier when you know exactly what you're saving for and how much to put away each week.
Step 1: Name it and price it
"A new sofa, £600" is easier to stick to than "save more". Be specific.
Step 2: Pick a date
Then divide what's left to save by the number of weeks until then. For example, £600 over 30 weeks is £20 a week.
Step 3: Make it automatic
Set up a standing order to a separate savings account on payday, so the money moves before you can spend it.
Step 4: Track it and celebrate
Seeing the total go up keeps you going. If you miss a week, just carry on.
Where to keep your savings
An ISA lets you save without paying tax on the interest. In the 2026 to 2027 tax year you can save up to £20,000 in ISAs in total. You must be 18 or over and usually live in the UK. Many people also get some interest tax-free outside an ISA through the Personal Savings Allowance.
Want a challenge?
The 52-week challenge starts at £1 in week 1 and goes up £1 each week, to £52 in week 52. That's £1,378 in a year.
